The Blueberry and the Civil Rights Movement

There may not seem to be an obvious connection between blueberries and the Civil Rights Movement, but the two are actually linked in an important way. One of the lesser-known aspects of the Civil Rights Movement was the struggle for economic justice and equal access to jobs. This included the agricultural industry, where many Black farmers and farm workers faced discrimination and unequal treatment.

In the 1940s and 1950s, the blueberry industry was booming in the United States, particularly in the Northeast. However, most of the labor force was made up of migrant workers from Puerto Rico, Mexico, and other countries, who were often exploited and mistreated. In 1965, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, leaders of the United Farm Workers union, launched a boycott of California table grapes to demand better wages and working conditions for farm workers.

Around the same time, a group of African American blueberry workers in New Jersey decided to organize and demand better treatment from their employers. Led by a woman named Gloria Richardson, the workers formed a group called the Cambridge Nonviolent Action Committee (CNAC). They held protests and demonstrations, including a famous incident where Richardson pushed away a National Guard soldier’s bayonet, earning her the nickname «Gloria the Brave.»

The CNAC’s efforts brought attention to the issue of economic injustice in the blueberry industry and helped inspire other movements for workers’ rights and racial equality. While the blueberry workers did not achieve all their goals, their activism paved the way for future progress and highlighted the intersections between different struggles for justice and equality.

So the next time you enjoy a summer treat of fresh blueberries, remember the important role they played in the Civil Rights Movement and the ongoing fight for economic justice and equality.
